Registration is through the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD).
Registration information:

1. If there is no fee required, please contact Coyote Hills Regional Park (or Central Registration) to pre-register. There is a maximum number of participants for each class. Call the phone number indicated in the description.
2. If there is a program fee, please register with EBRPD Central Registration, through on-line registration or by phone. To register on-line, access http://www.ebparks.org/webreg.To register by phone, call 1-888-327-2757. Phone registration requires a credit card. Call between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Fridays. The Central Registration office is closed on weekends and holidays. The course code for fee programs is indicated in the description
(some of the programs may not have the course code yet).

 

 

ARCHAEOLOGICAL VILLAGE SITE: OHLONE CULTURE

Travel into the past to visit a 2,000-year-old Tuibun village site. Learn about the Ohlone culture as we tour the replicated structures and examine reproduced tools of artifacts discovered at the archaeological site. We’ll look at plants that provided food, medicine and tools.

EDIBLE AND USEFUL PLANTS HIKE

The Ohlone Peoples and European settlers gathered wild plants for food, medicine and tools. We’ll look at plant samples and go on a springtime hike to identify edible bulbs, tubers and greens. You’ll process manzanita cider and gather miner’s lettuce for a tasty salad.

SKILLS OF THE PAST: FIRE MAKING

Ever wondered how fire was created before matches or a lighter. We’ll discover the secrets of fire-by-friction, fire-by-percussion and fire-by-compression. Unravel the techniques required to produce a glowing ember as we practice our fire making skills through hands-on activities.

SKILLS OF THE PAST: CORDAGE MAKING

The ability to twine, braid, twist, roll or weave plant fibers into cordage allowed indigenous cultures to tie their world together. You’ll learn the techniques of preparation, extraction and plying of plant materials to create cordage. The efficient method of leg rolling will be practiced.

NATURE PHOTO ESSAYS

Join us for a slide show presentation of fascinating images of animal behavior, gorgeous landscapes and colorful flowers. Each photo has a story to tell. Photographers, Mary Barnett and Sue Evans, will delight you with their tales of adventure through the eyes of their camera.

SKILLS OF THE PAST: STONE AGE COOKING

Find out how well our Paleolithic ancestors ate. Learn cooking methods using hot coals, rocks and earth ovens to prepare a delicious meal. We’ll feast on steamed pork, roasted salmon, and other scrumptious foods. Bring an appetite, be ready to roll up your sleeves and prepare to transform into Stone Age chefs.

FAMILY DAY: AQUATIC INSECTS IN CREEKS

Hidden under the water, among rocks and plants, is a tiny universe of fascinating and unusual critters. We’ll use dip nets to find out who eats who, how insects survive in a watery world and their relationship to the health of the stream.

FAMILY DAY: MONARCH BUTTERFLIES

Come and discover the relationship between butterflies and flowers. View a slide show of the incredible life cycle of the Monarch as it transforms into a caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. We’ll visit the Nectar Garden and search for these flying jewels and their host plant.

BACKYARD BIRD AND BUTTERFLY FESTIVAL

Join us for the 9th Annual Backyard Bird and Butterfly Festival. Dedicated to increasing the numbers and species of butterflies in Bay Area landscapes, the festival offers a day of adventure and learning that allows you to get close to nature’s “flying jewels.” Learn how to bring your backyard to life by creating wildlife friendly habitat! Enjoy garden tours, family hands-on activities, educational speakers, slide presentations and music. The highlight of the afternoon is the Monarch butterfly release.

OHLONE VILLAGE SITE

Travel into California's past to visit a 2,000-year-old shellmound. Utilizing hunting/gathering technology, along with land management techniques, the Ohlone Peoples had a close physical and psychological bond to the environment.

CELEBRATE FATHER'S DAY IN THE STONE AGE

Travel back into time as we explore the lives of hunters and gatherers. We'll bond as a Paleolithic tribe as we discover our world through a new language, learn to use primitive tools, create fire-by-friction and feast on meat (hot dogs) and grain (buns).

SKILLS OF THE PAST: TULE DUCK DECOY

Experience how to construct a tule duck decoy from a marsh plant called tule.
June 22 (Coyote Hills Regional Park, 1:30-3:30 pm): We'll gather tule. NOTE - Participation in gathering tule is required to take the program.
June 29 (Quarry Lakes Regional Park, 9:30 am - 2:00 pm): We'll make a Paiute-style tule duck decoy and float it in the lake.

CREEK TO BAY BY BIKE

Behold the deepest hole at sea level in the Western Hemisphere, explore the marsh, view the salt ponds and marvel at wildlife. Join us on a 17-mile round trip bike tour along Alameda Creek and Coyote Hills. Follow our watershed and travel to the Bay.

Experience how to construct a tule boat from a marsh plant. July 19 (meet at the Coyote Hills Regional Park Visitor Center): We’ll gather tule. June 26: We’ll build a three-person tule boat and launch it for a paddle around the lake. Participation in gathering tule is required to take the program.

EDUCATORS ACADEMY: OHLONE GAMES AND TOOLS FOR YOUR CLASSROOM

This hands-on workshop is designed for teachers and individuals interested in Ohlone material culture. Participants will enrich their knowledge of Ohlone culture and create a “cultural teaching kit” that will help cultural history come alive for students. Each day, participants will create replicas using traditional natural materials. The cultural teaching kit includes a bone tool, dogbane cordage, hoop & pole game, miniature tule mat, teacher’s resource guide, and recommended book list. Class information is aligned with the California State Academic Content Standards.
Earn University Credit - The Educators Academy provides opportunities to earn graduate-level academic credits from California State University East Bay, Extended and Continuing Education.
