Registration information:
1. If there is no fee required, please contact Coyote Hills Regional
Park (or Central Registration) to pre-register. There is a maximum
number of participants for each class. Call the phone number indicated
in the description.
2. If there is a program fee, please register with EBRPD Central Registration,
through on-line registration or by phone. To register on-line,
access http://www.ebparks.org/webreg.To
register by phone, call 1-888-327-2757. Phone registration requires
a credit card. Call between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays
and 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Fridays. The Central Registration office
is closed on weekends and holidays. The course code for fee programs
is indicated in the description.
Visit a 2,000-year-old Tuibun village site. Utilizing hunting/gathering technology and land management techniques, the Ohlone Peoples had a close physical and psychological bond to their environment. View Ohlone plant uses.

SKILLS OF THE PAST: TULE BASKET

The marsh bulrush, called Tule, was used by California Native Americans for various utilitarian items, like mats, boats, houses, duck decoys, as well as baskets. What makes this versitile plant so unique? We'll learn more as we create a tule berry picking basket.

SOLSTICE CELEBRATION HIKE
Do what people around the world have done for thousands of years -- celebrate the longest day of the year. Bring your own light dinner to enjoy in the picnic area before the hike. Then don your mysterious solstice regalia (mask, costume, face paint, etc.), pick-up your non-metal instrument (rattles, whistles, drums) and join the procession to the Top of Red Hill for the lighting of the fire and merrymaking. We'll share watermelons, stories and marshmallows as we "put the sun to bed".

Travel back into time as we explore the daily life of Paleolithic hunters and gatherers. Test your early technology skills at atlatl throwing, create a fire by rubbing sticks together, twist cordage from plant fibers and make a stone tool.

Ohlone descendents, Mona Garibay and Rita Rodriguez, will speak about their family history. Mona is a Most Likely Descendent (MLD) with the Native American Heritage Commission. She is very active in archaeological site monitoring.

SKILLS OF THE PAST: STONE AGE COOKING
Find out how well our ancestors ate. Try ancient cooking styles using warm coals, an earth stove, hot rocks and a pit oven to prepare a delicious meal. We'll feast on steamed pork, roasted salmon and other delectable foods. Bring an appetite and be ready to roll up your sleeves.

TULE BOAT CONSTRUCTION
Tule boats were used by California Natives to travel across
inlets, deep marshes, lakes and bays. Learn how this boat was
constructed from a common marsh plant. We'll build a two-person
tule boat and launch it for a paddle around the lake.
NOTE: There is a limited number of participants for this program.
Pre-register early. Participation in gathering tule is required for both classes.

EDUCATORS ACADEMY:
OHLONE TOOLS & GAMES FOR THE CLASSROOM
This hands-on workshop is designed for teachers and individulas interested in Ohlone material culture. Participants will enrich their knowledge of the Ohlone culture and create a "cultural teaching kit" that will help cultural history come alive for students. In each session, the participants will create replicas using traditional natural materials. The cultural teaching kit includes dogbane cordage, a bone tool, a pecked stone tool, games of chance, a miniature tule mat, a miniature rabbitskin blanket, a teacher's resource guide and recommended books. This course is aligned with the California State Content Standards.

Acorns were, and still are, a nutritious food of California Native Americans. Join Ohlone elder, Ruth Orta, and Naturalist, Dino Labiste, as they demonstrate the techniques of acorn processing. Stone tools, as well as modern tools, will be used to shell, pound and cook the acorns into a meal.

Enjoy an energetic uphill 5.5 mile loop hike that takes in a beautiful panoramic view of the Bay Area. We'll explore the relationship of the oaks and the animals that feed upon the seasonal acorns. Also, learn about Ohlone culture, bedrock mortars and acorn processing.

Learn the art of turning an obsidian flake into a functional cutting tool. We'll practice beginning skills to create a microblade and shape an arrowhead. Experienced flintknappers will guide you along the way as you percussion flake a spall from an obsidian cobble.

During pre-contact California, dart throwers were utilized by hunter/gatherer societies in the Central Valley. The atlatl, with it's stone-tipped dart, pre-dated the bow and arrow. Learn the history of the atlatl, watch a demonstration and try your skill at hitting a cardboard target.
