Outside Educators travels to schools or organization/group sites to present natural history and cultural history programs. We also develop and present classes to the public on topics of ecology, flora and fauna, ecosystems, indigenous skills and Paleolithic technology.
In classrooms and auditoriums, or other appropriate sites within a reasonable driving distance/time from Fremont, California.
One of the ways for elementary schools to learn about natural and cultural history is to take a trip to a park or museum and to participate in their programs. Unfortunately, the cost of transportation, liability insurance and the necessity to arrange for parental assistance and consent makes such a trip difficult for many schools. Outside Educators was developed in 2004 as an alternative, or adjunct to field trips. We have spent many hours developing and producing some spectacular reproductions of material culture, dramatic teaching tools and costumes. We have a number of specimens and small live animals with which we illustrate scientific concepts. By bringing resources ordinarily unavailable to the teachers and engaging children in hands-on activities, we hope to fire up interest and encourage the learning process.
Outside Educators currently provides Alameda, Castro Valley, Hayward, Fremont, Mountain View, Newark and Pleasanton Unified School Districts with a series of in-class natural history and cultural history programs. Presentations are done at the school. The programs are tailored to meet the California State Content Standards for the various grade levels, subject of interest and activity preference. We have done programs for private schools in Berkeley, Lafayette, Santa Clara, Auburn and Manteca, along with Home School presentations. Outside Educators has conducted programs for organizations like Edu-Culture International (high school foreign students from Spain, Austria, Germany and France) and Montessori Family School. We are also presenting classes through the Math/Science Nucleus in Fremont and the Miwok Archaeological Preserve of Marin at the Point Reyes National Seashore. Dino Labiste and Susan Labiste are Outside Educators' co-directors and educators.
